Winona Ryder is the professionally-known name for Winona Laura Hoowitz. She was born in Winona Minnesota. Her parents named her after the town she grew up in. Her father Michel Horowitz, and mother Cynthia Palmer are authors and editors. Ryder's father was from an ethnically Jewish family Ryder believes she is Jewish. She also has a half-sister, Sunyata Jubal. Her older sister is Uria. Ryder was born in the United States and moved with her family members to Mendocino County California at the age of seven. There wasn't electricity. The books on television were the only way for Ryder to pass the time. Eventually, she began to read extensively. When she turned twelve, Ryder was accepted into the American Conservatory Theatre to take acting classes. In the year she turned fifteen, she landed her first acting job onscreen, playing Lucas. Ryder suffered from bullying throughout high school. Ryder was hopeful that her work as an actress would make a difference. However, it didn't take place. But that didn't stop her following her dreams. Beetlejuice the 1988 Tim Burton film, was her first major breakthrough. Ryder kept playing successful roles in several movies. In 1993 she won an Oscar Prize to be awarded for The Age of Innocence.
